“If the intel on this attack is confirmed, we’ll be at war with Vollmar within the week,” Doran Balsa snorted.

“I’m aware of this, Senator,” Lucius Kovac replied coldly. Kovac was the supreme military commander in the Empire of Navarus for good reason. Since his recruitment thirty years ago, he had grown into the most feared and respected military leader in the world. Navarus was the second largest nation in the world in economy but the first in military might and territory. It wasn’t their economy, but Kovac’s reputation that kept alliances intact and enemies at bay.

Diplomatic tension with its closest rival, the nation of Vollmar was strained, to say the least. The two governed in vastly different styles, making them constant competitors in nearly every way. They each had resources the other needed, and the threat of cutting the other off any time questions were raised was common. There had been a steady buildup in military power for both nations fearing that war might erupt between the two at any moment.

The attack on the Imperial Capital had Vollmar’s fingerprints on it. Tamrus, the king of Vollmar, denied and denounced the attack, but few within the Empire believed him. The investigation had taken a year, but they had to be certain. If it was proven, even in the smallest way, that Vollmar was involved, the emperor would be forced to declare war.

Emperor Navarro was emperor by lineage but was little more than a figure head in the Empire of Navarus. Laws could not be enacted or enforced without his seal, and certain appointments rested only with him, but otherwise he was a relic from a bygone age. Lucius Kovac was the perfect choice to lead the Empire in peace or in war.

Even with a world on the brink and Balsa the fly buzzing in his ear about it, Kovac was intent on Oryan Jeckstadt. The general watched the live feed of Oryan’s current combat sim. Not only was he still undefeated and the most celebrated Centauri of all time, today was his sixteenth birthday, so the cameras couldn’t get enough of him.

Unlike most, Kovac knew his true lineage. In his life, Kovac had only been afraid of one man, and that was Armay of Acamar. Oryan seemed to be a further extension of his father. Whatever Halgren and Ratajek promised him seemed to be keeping him contained, and that was a very good thing. Kovac wasn’t sure how much Oryan knew, but he was sure if Oryan knew the whole story, there wouldn’t be very many safe places for a lot of people and, perhaps, for the Empire as a whole.

The sim was simulated urban combat, the arena floor filled with small buildings and other obstacles for the Centauri to navigate through. The harmless rubber bullets streaked in all directions. Both teams consisted of twelve combatants. Two of Oryan’s team were down, double that from the opposing squad.

Despite being the youngest on the field, it was obvious Oryan was in charge. He placed snipers in excellent positions.
